1. Frisian: the language this guide teaches
This guide teaches standard West Frisian (Frysk; ISO 639-3 fry), the Frisian language of Fryslân in the Netherlands—not the North-Holland Dutch dialect also called Westfries. It is a West Germanic Anglo-Frisian language and a close historical relative of English, but English resemblance is a starting point, not a shortcut to comprehension.12
The target is standard written West Frisian, with Clay Frisian as the reference orientation where the local dossier records a Clay/Wood difference. Dialectal forms are labelled rather than merged. Treat the CEFR labels below as study milestones designed for this guide, not as a claim that a regulator has certified item.
First words: greet, thank, and notice the spelling
| Frisian | English | source note |
|---|---|---|
| hello | dictionary headword | |
| goodbye / farewell | dictionary headword | |
| please | dictionary headword | |
| / tankewol | thanks / thank you | dictionary headwords |
| ja / | yes / no | dictionary headwords |
| welcome | dictionary headword |
These are attested dictionary forms, selected from the same CC BY-SA source used for the companion deck.6 They are useful opening vocabulary, not a claim that one greeting fits every social setting.
2. Spelling and sound: learn the written standard first
Frisian uses the Latin alphabet. Accented vowels such as â, ê, ô and û are part of ordinary spelling; do not strip them in careful writing. The sound system has length and rounding contrasts, many diphthongs, and partly unspelled final devoicing. A pronunciation guide or teacher is especially valuable before you generalise from English spelling.34
| Spelling feature | What to do | attested illustration |
|---|---|---|
| â, ê, ô, û | keep the accent when copying and searching | Fryslân; |
| ts | do not assume English <ts> values | ‘cheese’; tsjerke ‘church’ |
| final obstruents | listen as well as | dossier records final devoicing |
| diphthongs | learn whole words before predicting sound | ‘stone’; beam ‘tree’ |

3. Nouns, articles, and pronouns
Modern Frisian has two grammatical genders: common de and neuter it. It has largely lost the older case system, but retains a genitive -s. Learn a noun together with its gender/article; do not infer gender from English. The local research dossier treats the exact full paradigm as an area for a direct grammar check rather than reproducing one from memory.4
| Function | Frisian | English / caution |
|---|---|---|
| common definite article | de | the (common gender) |
| neuter definite article | it | the (neuter) |
| I | ik | personal pronoun |
| you, informal singular | do | Clay-Frisian-oriented form |
| he / she | hy / sy | third-person forms |
| we / they | wy / hja | personal pronouns |
Pronunciation and pronoun choices vary. The dossier records a Wood Frisian contrast mi/di/hi/si/wi/bi beside Clay forms such as my/dy/hy/sy/wy/by; that is a variation note, not permission to mix systems without context.4
4. Verbs and verb-second: learn from real input
Frisian is described as verb-second (V2) in main clauses, a Germanic pattern also familiar from Dutch and German; subordinate clauses show verb-final tendencies. It retains weak, strong and irregular verb classes. Rather than fabricate a full conjugation chart, use the cited grammar portal and authenticated examples to build paradigms for verb you meet.34
| Dictionary form | English | study use |
|---|---|---|
| wêze | to be | irregular; learn in authentic sentences |

| lêze | to | core verb |
| skriuwe | to write | core verb |
At this stage, use the SRS deck to acquire forms and the Tatoeba reader below to real sentences. Do not silently treat a dictionary infinitive as a complete sentence.
5. Breaking (brekking): a real alternation, not a typo
A characteristic Frisian pattern called breaking changes some falling diphthongs in plural or diminutive environments. It is analysed differently in the literature, so learn the documented pairs first and let a full grammar guide you on productivity.45
| Base | Derived form | English | environment |
|---|---|---|---|
| stiennen | stone / stones | plural | |
| beamke | tree / little tree | diminutive | |
| foet | fuotten | foot / feet | plural |
| doas | doaske | box / little box | diminutive |

7. Dialects, Dutch contact, and careful comparison
Standard Frisian has internal variation, including Clay, Wood, Súdwesthoek and island varieties. Dutch is widely present in the same region, but historical relatedness does not make Dutch a substitute for Frisian: the local dossier records low written intelligibility in one Dutch–Frisian cloze-test study. Use cognates as memory hooks, then verify meanings and pronunciation in Frisian sources.24
| English | Frisian | Dutch (orientation only) |
|---|---|---|
| butter | boter | |
| bread | brood | |
| green cheese | griene | groene kaas |
| church | kerk |
The famous cognate resemblance is memorable, but avoid making word-for-word English or Dutch calques. Dictionaries and real texts should decide the form you use.
8. Extended sentence reader and listening strategy
Use the next set in three passes: first for word recognition, then listen to a native recording where available, then annotate only the forms you can verify. This protects against an attractive but unreliable habit: treating generated language as a citation.

9. What advanced control looks like
At C1, prioritise register, regional variation, literary and media comprehension, and accurate source comparison. Work with materials that identify their authorship, dialect and date. For grammatical disputes—such as the status of rising diphthongs—report the analysis and source rather than flattening it into one universal rule.45
Common English-first pitfalls
- Overtrusting cognates: similarity to English is historical, not a guarantee of modern meaning.
- Dropping accents: treat â/ê/ô/û as meaningful spelling, not decorative typography.
- Ignoring V2: collect whole clauses from authentic text rather than translating English word order.
- Mixing dialect forms: record the source variety, especially for pronouns and pronunciation.
- Overclaiming a rule: mark a grammar claim as a hypothesis until you can cite a grammar or corpus example.
10. Continue with community-led sources
Mastery means participating responsibly: Frisian media, work with native speakers and teachers, and cite or link to the source of any reusable example. The Fryske Akademy, Taalportaal and Afûk are useful starting points; use their current terms and guidance when sharing material.358
