A noun-phrase item, such as an article or demonstrative, that helps anchor or quantify what the phrase refers to.
In precise terms
In analyses that use this category, a determiner is a functional element identified by its distribution within a noun phrase. English articles and adnominal demonstratives share a syntactic position, but languages differ in which forms pattern together and whether one unified determiner class is justified.
An example
[DET this] + [N book] (English distributional schema)
What is going on here
The label DET marks 'this' as an adnominal demonstrative: it helps the listener identify the intended referent, while 'book' supplies the noun. This is an English-style analysis, not a template that every language must share.
Why this matters when you are learning a language
Articles and other noun-phrase markers are frequent, small and easy to overlook. Learning which forms belong together, where they occur and whether they can co-occur prevents you from importing the noun-phrase pattern of a language you already know.
Across languages
Articles, demonstratives, possessive forms and quantifiers do not necessarily form one category in every language. Some languages lack articles; in others an article and a demonstrative occupy different positions or can appear together, so the category must be supported by that language's own distributional evidence.
