Unifon — John Malone's 40-letter single-sound alphabet for English

Unifon is a Latin-based phonemic orthography for American English: 40 characters for what its inventor called the 40 "most important sounds" of the language, one symbol per sound, no digraphs. It was designed in the mid-1950s by **John R. Malone**, a Chicago economist and newspaper-equipment consultant, and it spent most of its life not as a spelling reform but as a *teaching aid* — a temporary alphabet children learn to read in, then abandon.2 Its most consequential afterlife was somewhere else entirely: in the 1970s and 1980s it was adapted as a practical orthography for four Native American languages of northwestern California.12

Where it came from

  • Malone became interested in phonetic writing while consulting for the **Bendix Corporation**, which was thinking about aviation communication. When the International Air Transport Association selected English as the language of international airline communications in **1957**, the market Bendix had foreseen evaporated and Malone's contract was terminated.12
  • By Malone's own account the alphabet resurfaced when his young son, then in kindergarten, complained that he still could not read. Malone recovered it to teach him.12
  • From about 1960 into the 1980s, **Margaret S. Ratz** used Unifon to teach first-graders at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, and built the pedagogy around it.12 By the summer of 1960 the ABC affiliate in Chicago had produced a 90-minute programme in which Ratz taught three children to read — "17 hours with cookies and milk," as Malone put it. Ratz's own framing was modest and is the honest one: "Some have called Unifon 'training wheels for reading', and that's what it really is. Unifon will be used for a few weeks, or perhaps a few months…"2
  • National attention followed: NBC's *Today Show*, and a CBS *On the Road* segment by Charles Kuralt called "The Day They Changed the Alphabet."2 A 1977 *New York Times* piece by John Culkin reported first-graders taught with Unifon scoring "well beyond the third grade level" on standard Stanford reading tests in the traditional alphabet — Malone supplying the alphabet, Ratz the pedagogy, Elizabeth Jones doing the teaching.3
  • In 1981 Malone handed the project to **John M. Culkin**, a media scholar, former Jesuit and Harvard School of Education graduate, who promoted it from 1974 until his death in 1993, including several articles in *Science Digest*.12 The website unifon.org was created in 2000 by Pat Katzenmaier with input from the linguist Steve Bett, and remains the organising point for what is left of the effort.23

How it works

  • Unifon is a **bicameral** script written left to right, but the casing behaves unlike anything else. Most Unifon text is set in ALL CAPITALS; where casing is used, the lower-case forms are conventionally — always — rendered as SMALL CAPITALS. It is styled text, not a separate set of letterforms.1
  • Because so much of the inventory overlaps with the Latin alphabet, Everson's encoding analysis treats Unifon as a **set of extensions to Latin**, not a separate script: of the 66 letters used across all the Unifon alphabets, 43 — about two-thirds — unify with existing Latin characters.1
  • **The set of sounds stayed fixed; the symbols did not.** There was a first published version (the "Shaw–Malone Forty-Phoneme Alphabet"), at least two intermediate 40-letter alphabets, and the final one. Modern Unifon is therefore noticeably different from Old Unifon, and a document's date matters when you read it.12
  • Generic combining diacritics are used in the Native American orthographies: U+0301 acute for stress in Tolowa, and U+0304 macron above / U+0331 macron below to "harden" and "soften" the sound written X [x].1

The 40-letter English alphabet

Unifon has no encoding as a script, so the letters that are *not* ordinary Latin characters cannot be shown reliably here — they are given by Everson's descriptive names instead, with a shape note. Values are those in the Unicode proposal, which is the most careful published inventory.1

**A caution on two cells.** Everson's proposal gives Ƶ *Z with stroke* the value [ʒ] and *reversed Z* the value [z]; Wikipedia's chart of the current alphabet reverses these, giving Ƶ = /z/ and a separate glyph for /ʒ/. We have followed the Unicode proposal, but the two published sources disagree and we have not been able to check a primary Unifon chart. Treat that pair as unconfirmed.12

Everson also records letters used in **earlier** versions of Unifon and in the Native American alphabets, which is why the union across all Unifon alphabets runs to 66 letters rather than 40 — several sounds have had two or three different symbols over the alphabet's life. Among them: C for /s/, Ↄ *reversed C* for /tʃ/, Ǝ *turned E* for /ə/, Ø *O with stroke* for /ʊ/, X for /x/, and the *turned T* and *theta* letters for /ð/ and /θ/.1

A worked sample

Because Unifon is Latin-with-extras and is normally set in capitals, English written in Unifon is partly readable on sight — which was exactly the design goal, since children were meant to transition out of it. Evertype's Unifon edition of *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland* is titled **ALISIƵ ADVENȻƵ IN WUNDLAND**, which decodes as:1

That last row shows Unifon's real character. It is not a careful phonemic analysis of English; it is a *Chicago-flavoured* practical spelling. Wikipedia is blunt about this: not all sounds are distinguished — reduced vowels in American dialects other than Chicago's are among the casualties.2

The Native American orthographies

The most historically significant use of Unifon is the one Malone had nothing to do with. In the 1970s and 1980s **Tom Parsons** of Humboldt State University adapted it as a practical orthography for **Hupa**, **Yurok**, **Tolowa** and **Karuk**, the schemes then being improved by native scholars.12 The published alphabets are language-sized rather than English-sized: 33 letters for Hupa, 26 for Karuk, 30 for Tolowa, 32 for Yurok, all drawn from a common 42-letter "Indian Unifon Single-Sound Alphabet".1

Years of teaching went into them and a substantial body of material was produced at Humboldt — spelling books, dictionaries, coloring books, numbers books, lesson books, a natural-resources dictionary. But linguists were sceptical throughout, and once Parsons left the university the impetus faded; every one of the four languages now uses a different orthography.2 Leanne Hinton's chapter on new writing systems in *The Green Book of Language Revitalization in Practice* is the standard account.2 Everson's argument for encoding is precisely that these documents exist and deserve to be representable — a preservation case, not a promotional one.1

Encoding, fonts and tagging

  • **Unifon is not encoded as a script.** Everson's 2012 proposal to the UTC and WG2 (L2/12-138 = N4262, from the UC Berkeley Script Encoding Initiative) is explicitly preliminary — its own cover form answers "is this a complete proposal?" with *No* — and it argues that Unifon should be handled as Latin extensions rather than a new script.1
  • The proposal doubles as a serious argument for **disunifying** Latin beta, theta, chi and omega from their Greek counterparts, on the grounds that the IPA's designers effectively did so already and that Greek casing behaviour is wrong for these Latin orthographies (Tuscarora, early Unifon, the early Phonotypic alphabet). John Wells is quoted supporting the disunification.1
  • In practice, Unifon-specific letters live in **Private Use Area** assignments. The ConScript Unicode Registry allocates U+E740–U+E76F, and dedicated fonts are offered on unifon.org; Quivira, Catrinity and a few others carry coverage.23
  • There *is* a registered **IETF language variant subtag**, `unifon`, for tagging text as written in Unifon. It is restricted to five language tags: `en`, `hup` (Hupa), `kyh` (Karok), `tol` (Tolowa), `yur` (Yurok) — a neat summary of everything Unifon was ever actually used for.2

Honest limitations

  • **The evidence base is anecdotal.** Unifon was tested in Chicago, Indianapolis and elsewhere through the 1960s and 1970s, but **no statistical analysis of the outcome was ever published in an academic journal**. The claims that circulate — reading in 17 hours, first-graders at third-grade level — come from television segments, newspaper features and advocacy material, not from peer review.2
  • **It encodes one accent.** The 40 sounds are Chicago's. Distinctions that matter elsewhere in American English, and the reduced vowels of other dialects, are not represented.2
  • **Its symbol set is unstable.** Three or four generations of 40-letter alphabet, with the same sounds and different glyphs, means older Unifon materials do not straightforwardly match newer ones.
  • **The revitalisation episode is a cautionary tale, not a success story.** A writing system that depends on one champion at one institution does not survive that champion's departure. Interest from educators has been limited throughout; what continues is a community of enthusiasts publicising the scheme.2
  • **Do not confuse it with the Initial Teaching Alphabet.** James Pitman's ITA is the other, far more widely deployed "transitional alphabet" of the same era, and it is a different system with a different history.
