🩺Shriberg & Kent (S-K) Clinical Transcription

The Shriberg & Kent (S-K) system is the transcription framework taught in Clinical Phonetics, the standard American textbook for training speech-language pathologists in phonetic transcription. It is not a rival alphabet: it is the IPA plus a set of clinical conventions and — just as importantly — a structured, audio-based method for teaching people to transcribe disordered speech reliably. Its identity is as much a training tradition (the famous transcription drills) as a symbol set.¹²

What it covers

Per the publisher descriptions, Clinical Phonetics teaches consonant, vowel, and diphthong symbols; diacritics for narrow transcription (the fine detail that matters clinically — degrees of nasality, devoicing, timing); and suprasegmentals such as stress patterning. The whole thing is wrapped in tested, skills-based teaching: listen to a sample, transcribe it, check against the key.¹²

It is a clinical-training system, not a general standard

S-K coexists with extIPA and VoQS — the international standards for clinical and voice-quality symbols, covered in their own guides here. The central caution is not to cite an S-K diacritic as if it were an extIPA symbol, or vice versa; how exactly S-K conventions map onto extIPA usage is a real question that depends on edition and context. Treat S-K as the North-American SLP training framework it is, rather than a general-linguistics standard.³

Editions matter — the symbol set is revised

Because S-K is a textbook, "the system" changes across editions, and citing the wrong one can misattribute conventions. The verified edition chain:⁴⁵

The 5th edition added co-authors Tara McAllister and Jonathan Preston; the current 6th edition, from Plural Publishing, adds Marisha Speights. When you cite an S-K convention, cite the edition.⁴⁵

Errors to avoid

• Citing S-K diacritics as if they were extIPA symbols (or vice versa) — they are different conventions.³
• Assuming one fixed symbol set across all editions — the text is revised, most recently in the 6th edition.⁴⁵
• Treating S-K as a general-linguistics standard rather than a clinical-training system for speech-language pathologists.¹
• Forgetting the audio-drill method is part of the system's identity, not an optional extra.²
