HamNoSys (Hamburg Sign Language Notation System)

HamNoSys — the Hamburg Sign Language Notation System (German Hamburger Notationssystem für Gebärdensprachen) — is a notation system for the form of signed-language signs. The team that maintains it, the Institute of German Sign Language at the University of Hamburg, describes it as a "phonetic" transcription system in the tradition of Stokoe notation, expanded so that it is not tied to the assumptions of American Sign Language and can be applied to signed languages internationally.12

The single most important framing: HamNoSys writes down the form of a sign — how the hands are shaped, where they are, how they move — not its meaning. It is not a writing system for daily Deaf-community communication, not a national sign-language orthography, and not the gloss labels (like HOUSE or GIVE) used to tag signs in a corpus. It is closest in spirit to a phonetic alphabet for the hands.13

What a HamNoSys transcription records

A sign is notated as an initial configuration followed by the actions that change it over time. The parameters are the classic building blocks of sign phonology:14

An older German overview of the system counts roughly 200 symbols, which gives a sense of its granularity compared with a fingerspelling chart or a glossing scheme.4

The non-manual limitation

HamNoSys concentrates, like most sign-notation systems, on manual activity. Its own documentation acknowledges that it can describe non-manual articulators — facial expression, gaze, head and body posture — only partly, often by treating another articulator as the "actor" of a movement.4 Because non-manual features carry real grammar in signed languages (negation, question marking, adverbial nuance), a HamNoSys string is not a complete record of an utterance. Guides and datasets should say so explicitly.4

"International" is a design claim, not a universal-language claim

The official description says HamNoSys does not encode nationally specific fingerspelling and can therefore be applied across sign languages.1 Read that carefully: it is a statement about the notation's design, not evidence that all sign languages share the same phonological categories or that one transcription can replace language-specific analysis. A comparative study by Power, Quinto-Pozos & Law (2022) used HamNoSys to build a basic-vocabulary database across thirteen signed languages — useful proof of concept, but it also reported that transcription time and parameter-level agreement between trained transcribers can vary.5

Toolchain — unusually practical for a notation system

Unlike many historical systems, HamNoSys has real software support. The Hamburg repository distributes version 4.1.7 as a package with a Unicode font, a macOS keyboard layout, and a symbol-palette app, under a Creative Commons Attribution licence; CTAN provides a hamnosys LaTeX package for XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX with its own Unicode font and input methods.67 HamNoSys also feeds signing-avatar pipelines through the related SiGML markup, which is a separate format for driving animation, not part of HamNoSys itself.1

Errors to avoid

  • Treating HamNoSys as a sign language, or as a everyday writing system for Deaf communities — it is a form-transcription notation.14
  • Assuming a HamNoSys string captures non-manual grammar as fully as it captures the hands — it does not.4
  • Reading "internationally applicable" as "language-neutral" or "sufficient to replace language-specific analysis."15
  • Confusing HamNoSys with SignWriting, Stokoe notation, glossing, or the SiGML/avatar control format — these are distinct systems with different jobs.1
  • Copying handshape charts or sign examples without checking the source's licence and permissions.6
