Elefen (Lingua Franca Nova)

A1Beginner · Orientation & foundations

1. What Elefen is

Lingua Franca Nova — abbreviated LFN and known colloquially as Elefen (a spelling-out of the letters L-F-N) — is a constructed international auxiliary language. Its vocabulary is drawn primarily from the Romance languages (French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan), and its grammar is modelled on Romance-based creoles, giving it a deliberately simple, largely uninflected structure.14 Confidence: High.

It is catalogued by Glottolog under ling1267 and holds ISO 639-3 code lfn, assigned by SIL in January 2008.23 Confidence: High.

The language was created by American psychologist C. George Boeree of Shippensburg University, Pennsylvania, who began designing it in 1965 and first presented it online in 1998. It has since been developed by a community of users and is now overseen by the Asosia per Lingua Franca Nova (ALFN). Boeree died in January 2021.4 Confidence: High.

2. Writing system and orthography

Elefen is normally written in the Latin alphabet with a highly phonemic spelling — words are written as they sound. The standard alphabet has 22 letters: a b c d e f g h i j l m n o p r s t u v x z. The letters k, q, w and y are kept in reserve for foreign names and loanwords. A Cyrillic script was co-official until 2021.14 Confidence: High.

A few letter values differ from English expectations: c is always [k], j is [ʒ] (the 's' in 'measure'), and x is [ʃ] ('sh'). The letter h is marginal and may be silent.4 Confidence: High.

3. Pronunciation

Elefen has five vowels — a e i o u — pronounced roughly as in Spanish or Italian, plus four diphthongs: ai, au, eu and oi.4 Confidence: High.

c[k]always hard 'k'

Stress is not phonemic, but as a rule most words are stressed on the vowel (or diphthong) before the last consonant — for example casa, abeon, baia. Words ending in a diphthong are stressed on that diphthong (cacau). Adding the plural -s or -es does not move the stress.4 Confidence: High.

4. Core grammar

Elefen is a subject–verb–object language, and modifiers generally follow what they modify. Nouns are invariant except for the plural, which is -s (or -es after a consonant); a noun's role is shown by word order and prepositions, not by case endings. Nouns usually take an article — la ('the') or un ('a') — or another determiner such as esta ('this'), acel ('that') or multe ('many').4 Confidence: High.

Verbs are also invariant. The bare verb is both the present tense and the infinitive; other tenses and moods are shown by a particle placed before the verb:4 Confidence: High.

Tense / moodParticleExampleEnglish
present— (none)me vadeI go
pastiame ia vadeI went
futurevame va vadeI will go
conditionaltame ta vadeI would go

Personal pronouns do not change for case: me ('I/me'), tu ('you'), el ('he/she — animate'), lo ('it — inanimate'), nos ('we/us'), vos ('you all'), los ('they/them'). The reflexive is se, and the impersonal on is like the generic 'you/one'.4 Confidence: High.

The active participle ends in -nte and the passive participle in -da; combined with es ('to be') they build the progressive and the passive. Comparatives use plu ('more') or min ('less'), and superlatives la plu / la min. Questions are formed with esce at the front of a statement, or with a question word such as cual ('what/which'), ci ('who'), do ('where'), cuando ('when') or perce ('why').4 Confidence: High.

5. Building words: affixes

A small set of regular affixes lets Elefen build new words predictably. The suffix -or names a person (carne 'meat' → carnor 'butcher'), -ador names a device (lava 'wash' → lavador 'washing machine'), and -eria names a place (flor 'flower' → floreria 'florist'). The diminutive is -eta and the augmentative -on. Common prefixes include non- ('not'), re- ('again') and des- ('undo'), as in nonfelis ('unhappy') and desinfeta ('disinfect').4 Confidence: High.

6. A small set of attested words

The words below are limited to items attested in the sources reviewed for this guide. The full official dictionary (Disionario de Elefen) holds over 20,000 entries; see the links in section 8.14 Confidence: High.

7. Culture and reading material

Elefen has an active literary community. A Wikipedia edition, Vicipedia, launched in 2018, and the official site hosts a searchable dictionary and a growing library of texts. Many classics have been translated into Elefen — including Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (La aventuras de Alisia en la pais de mervelias), The Little Prince (La prinse peti), Winnie-the-Pooh (Wini-la-Pu) and A Christmas Carol (Un canta de natal) — and the first original novel written in the language, La xerca per Pahoa by Vicente Costalago, appeared in 2020.4 These make useful graded reading once you have the basics. Confidence: High.

Honest limitations

This is an orientation, not a course. The vocabulary and example sentences are limited to items attested in the sources cited; the official grammar and dictionary are the canonical authorities for anything beyond them. No downloadable flashcard deck is provided in this version. Lingua Franca Nova has a community flag (five colour strips, designed in 2004 by Stefan Fisahn and Beate Hornung), but no verified flag file was available for this build, so the page shows the neutral marker rather than an unverified image. Facts here are restated in original wording from the cited sources; no source text or dictionary list is reproduced.
